Fence, Joe and Copernicus,

Thank you very much. You really kept my spirits up throughout this frustration. Eventually, I got there by experimenting with one of the buttons on the bar above where you put text on 'blogs.ie'. There's an image linked to 'insert an image'. That led me to a form on which I could paste the url and determine the dimensions of the photo. First I squashed a photo, then I tried again and it all flowed after that.

Now I've complicated my life: it used to be a simple text blog. Now I'm not sure what sort of beast I may be curating.

There should be an option to grab the url of an image in the word processor you use to create your posts.

Alternatively, you can blog direct from flickr itself. Just add your blog in your profile and then use the "blog this" option on your photo. The post is created at flickr and automatically appears here.

i.e http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1338/885050670_3a665ccf37_m.jpg

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, looking at the source I still get the code rather than the tag brackets.

I used to use blogs.ie, and testing it out over there pasting the code in the advanced editing works: http://fence.blogs.ie/

You could try just using the image url, that is the bit after the img src="
Copy that and then use the wordpress Quicktags. Click the img button and stick in the photo's url.
fingers crossed
